November 15th 1996 Forced to Look for Footie Stuff on the Internet If you search for news of Alan Shearer on the Internet, you may be surprised by the result. By latest information superhighway reports, Shearer plays for Blackburn Rovers and fans are concerned that he has not scored for England for over a year. Feels like time travel? more...

November 2nd 1996 at White Hart Lane It’s beginning to annoy me that I have to miss Football Focus every week. And there is a sentence I never thought I’d write. But it’s frustrating. Lifelong football supporters keep telling me “You’ve got to watch Football Focus, you know; it’s a ritual” -- but I’m always on a train somewhere on Saturday lunchtimes, and can’t. Last Saturday, heading for White Hart Lane (Spurs v West Ham), I made a cunning detour to the telly department of John Lewis on Oxford Street, so that at 12.30 I could watch it. But of course I could only whimper at the multiple soundless images of men, balls, and greensward emanating from the tellies, and paw feebly at the glass. more...

October 19th 1996 at Molineux The Wolves Club-Call on Monday night took a surprising tone, I thought. Saturday’s game may have been a wash-out, yet we must surely agree: “It’s always interesting at Molineux!” Interesting? Did that man say “interesting”? I put down the phone with a huff, and with infinite weariness raised my eyebrows Gromit-fashion. more...

October 26th 1996 at  Ashton Gate No sign of travel fatigue yet, amazingly, despite the fact that Ashton Gate is one of the worst sign-posted football grounds I ever visited, as well as being the most awkwardly positioned. It took me about two days to get home. more...

October 12th 1996 at Selhurst Park The ability to make the best of things seems to be important in football. At Selhurst Park, when you take your seat for a Wimbledon game, they don’t play Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best” gut-bucklingly loud on the PA (as they do at Wembley, making all the blood rush into your eye-sockets with excitement); they play “Remember You’re a Womble” instead. more...

October 9th 1996 at Wembley Rothmans gives this as 2-0; was the Polish goal disallowed? Did it happen only in my imagination? Sadly, I am too apathetic ten years later to find out. more...

September 28th 1996 at the Dell The advertising on the little electronic scoreboard at The Dell started to get hypnotic, after a while. “In a tight corner?” it would ask, whenever a corner was taken in the match. Struggling not to, I would take my eye off the ball yet again, just to check that the solution to the crowd’s tight-corner problem was still the same. more...
